The Courage to Build What’s Next: Reflections from the First Half of 2026

Insights by: Kelly Renz, CEO & Founder

As we reach the midpoint of 2026, I’ve had the privilege of spending time with leadership teams across industries, helping them navigate growth, challenges, opportunities, and change.

Let’s all agree that 2026 has been unpredictable for many industries. While every organization is unique, the first half of this year has revealed several common themes. Economic uncertainty continues to create questions for many leaders. Markets remain unpredictable. Customer expectations continue to evolve. Costs remain under pressure.

Yet despite those realities, the organizations making the most meaningful progress are not the ones waiting for certainty. They are the ones finding the courage to be decisive and build what’s next. They moved forward with clarity.

Over the past six months, I’ve observed leadership teams making difficult decisions, taking calculated risks, and confronting challenges they have often postponed for too long. In many cases, those decisions center around one of the most important responsibilities of leadership: ensuring the right people are in the right seats to support the next stage of growth.

One observation has surfaced repeatedly in conversations with business owners and executive teams.

The team that helped build the business is not always the team that can take it to the next level.

Sports fans understand this concept well. The roster that gets a team through the regular season is not always the roster that wins championships. As the level of competition changes, so do the capabilities required to succeed. Business is no different.

As organizations grow, leadership requirements evolve. Expectations increase. Complexity expands. Accountability becomes more important. Decision-making becomes more critical. This often forces leaders to confront difficult questions:

  • Do we have the right people in the right seats?
  • Are we developing our leaders fast enough to support where we want to go?
  • Are we holding onto individuals because of loyalty, history, or comfort rather than future capability?
  • Are we building the leadership capacity necessary for the business we want to become?

These are not easy conversations. They are often some of the most difficult decisions leaders face.

However, the organizations making the greatest strides this year have demonstrated the courage to address them directly. They have invested in leadership development. They have clarified accountability. They have elevated expectations. And when necessary, they have made difficult talent decisions in service of the organization’s future.

Most importantly, they have recognized that growth often requires change.

Another lesson that has stood out this year is that meaningful rewards rarely come without meaningful risk.

Every significant business breakthrough I’ve witnessed has required leaders to step into uncertainty before the outcome was guaranteed. Whether it involves entering a new market, launching a new service, restructuring a leadership team, making an acquisition, investing in technology, or hiring ahead of growth, progress rarely arrives without a willingness to take calculated risks.

Many leaders are understandably cautious right now. Economic headlines provide plenty of reasons to wait, pause, or delay decisions.

Yet the businesses creating momentum are not standing still. They are evaluating risks thoughtfully, making informed decisions, and moving forward with confidence despite not having every answer. They understand that uncertainty is not a temporary condition of business. It is part of leadership.

The organizations creating momentum right now are not necessarily the ones with the fewest obstacles. They are the ones willing to make decisions, take action, and continue moving forward despite uncertainty.

What gives me optimism as I look toward the second half of the year is seeing the number of leaders willing to embrace that challenge. They are choosing progress over perfection. They are making thoughtful decisions without having complete certainty. They are building stronger leadership teams while remaining focused on the future they want to create.

Business growth has never been about waiting for perfect conditions. It has always been about building the right team, creating clarity around where you’re headed, and having the courage to act before the entire path becomes visible.

As we enter the second half of 2026, perhaps the most important question leaders can ask themselves is this:

What decision have I been avoiding because I am waiting for certainty?

The answer may reveal exactly what is needed to move the business forward.

Because the leaders who create extraordinary results are rarely the ones who wait for the perfect moment.

They are the ones who find the courage to build what’s next.
